I Have The Best Daughter In The World!

I say that I have the best daughter in the world because she is always willing to help out an animal in need. Many times she goes above and beyond to help them.

Tonight we drove by an area where a house was torn down that used to have a lot of cats running around and sleeping on the porch. The house was torn down a few weeks ago and I stupidly thought that whoever had lived there must have made arrangements for the cats. Whether it was the person who used to live there or the person in charge of that person or whoever, they did not. We discovered the cats there this evening. She drove right to the store and bought cat food and a water bowl for them.

We went back and they all ran into the woods that surround the house. To our surprise we found that someone had been leaving food for them. Then we walked around behind a big tree into a nice little shaded spot and there was a lot of old empty food containers and cat food bags. It looked as if someone was trying to keep them fed and watered. We did wonder if a homeless person might have been staying there also. It was getting dark so we couldn’t really get a good look behind the hedge of trees and bushes.

Tomorrow I will call our No-Kill shelter and pray that they will for once have room for animal that I call about! At least we know they have enough food and some water.

So I have to say it again, I have the best daughter in the world! She is an animal hero.

The Social Lives of Dogs by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas

I finished reading it. I can not even begin to tell you how wonderful this book is. I think every human being whether they have a dog or not should read this book. It is just as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking at times. The bond that this woman and her husband have with all of their dogs, cats, and birds is beyond amazing. You will be stunned by the many things you learn about dogs and their most often misunderstood feelings. I can assure you that you will never look at a dog or cat or bird the same way again.

This woman is my hero and this book will forever be my favorite book. I will search every thrift store high and low for copies of this book to give to every family member, friend, neighbor and even strangers. I will find as many copies as I can to donate to animal shelters for people to take home with their new pets.

As for all of the dominance theories to dog training they are rubbish and I will never again adhere to any of them. Dogs deserve more respect than those programs give them. A dog truly is or could be man’s best friend.

If you want to understand you dog better and make a true lifelong bond then get this book as fast as you can.

If you or anyone you know is keeping a dog in a little fence at the very back of your yard then you are inflicting horrible pain and suffering on a member of your family and you need to fix that situation. A dog wants nothing more than to be as close to you as it can get. So by banishing it to the fartherst part of the yard you are telling it that is an unwanted, unloved bad dog. It cannot begin to fathom what it has done wrong. And we all know it hasn’t done anything wrong.  Think about it. And read the book.

Even if you don’t have a dog and are not a dog person you should read this book. You will be amazed, surprised and touched. If you aren’t then you just are not human. I cried from the very beginning and there are so many touching moments throughout the book. I’m only halfway through and I had to stop and tell you about the book. I do have to say that I would have done things different from the woman who wrote this book as far as the dog that she found on her front porch one day. Busy or not give a stray dog food and water to tide them over. They can not get it for themselves! Would you like to be lost, scared, confused, hungry and thirsty for days on end? Well dogs don’t like it either. You can almost always help yourself. Please remember an animal can’t. Give a helping hand. In spite of that little detour of a rant I do recommend that you read this book. It will give you an entirely new appreciation for dogs. It will show you that if you truly pay attention to your dog that they have been trying talking to you all along. Personally I think cats are the same.

Fantastic Find

for cats that is. And cat owners. Palermo from the blog, Project! featured this fabulous cat door cutout. This is the best idea ever! I hope she does’t mind me sharing, I just love it so much. She was freshly pressed today in case you didn’t catch it.

Do what you can , please

I am totally happy with myself today. I actually made it to the humane society and walked a dog! Probably the only dog who wanted to eat more than walk. At least he did his business and had a slight stroll.

I am really going to try to do this more often. It just has to be done. So think about what you can do to help your local shelter. While running errands can you stop in and walk one dog for a few minutes? Or spend one afternoon walking several? Maybe one saturday a month cleaning cages? How about picking up a load of laundry to do? I found out today that I can even pick up just a load that needs to be dried. Can you buy an extra bag of dog or cat food to donate? How about when they are on sale BOGO? Recently I went to Goodwill and purchased 7 little baby receiving blankets to donate. It only cost 7 dollars. But seven little sweeties will have a soft blanky to lay on. If you really think about it I am sure there are many ways that you can help out. So won’t you please think about it and help out a local shelter? Thank you if you do!!!

There is no gray area when it comes to animal abuse.

Speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.  Help the downtrodden, find the lost, feed the hungry.  It applies to the animals also.  People can help themselves animals cannot.
