Mosquito Evasion

Direct Gardening is having a sale on Mosquito Shoo plants. It is a citronella type plant that is supposed to repel mosquitos. Now that the West Nile Virus is spreading I think it is something we should probably invest in. The Mosquito Shoo plant is a potted plant that can be grown outdoors during the summer and some of us probably have plenty more summer left to make it worth our while to buy a few.

Lemon Balm is also another plant that is supposed to ward off the evil buggars. Some people like to use garlic, as in eating it. Of course we know that would also ward off any potential mates for those who are looking and family and friends. Also planting Marigolds, Mint, Vanilla scented geraniums

Encouraging bats and dragonflies are also ways to win the war against mosquitoes although as many bats as there are where I live I am not convinced. All of my bats must be on a diet.

Oh and last but not least walk around dressed head to toe in white gauzy material, you won’t look stupid like that.

Never Give Up

This story of a long lost dog will inspire you to never give up if your dog goes missing. A microchip and an animal hero were the keys to this beloved baby getting back home after six long years! And this story comes with an extra dose of happy to it! So remember, never, ever give up if your dog has been lost or possibly stolen.

One of the most important things you can do is to visit the pounds and shelters everyday. I know that when people just make a phone call that is not always sufficient enough. You have to go and look with your own eyes! And put out more flyers than you think are needed. Never give up!

How To Find A Lost Pet

While looking for tips to find a dog that is lost in our area I came across this information on PetFinder and wanted to share it with all of you. Please share it with everyone you know who has a pet.

I particularly like the advice of making huge signs as most that are posted on 8.5 x 11 paper are far too small to be seen while driving in a car. Get whiteboard and cut it out in the shape of a dog. Just a generic dog shape will be fine. Write, Help me I’m lost, on it. That will catch someone’s attention don’t you think? Put your phone number in a large easy to read size. Post signs at any and every store that will let you. Go to your local truck stop if there is one in your area and hand out fliers to the truckers. They are nice and willing to help. That is a lot of eyes.

I don’t think it would hurt to ask the local police either. After all they are out there riding around right? And how about local realtors? And mailmen! All they can say is no, but if you flashed the picture then they have seen it. Leave it on your mailbox. Set up a large poster size whiteboard/foamboard in your front yard with huge ( it really does have to be huge)  font in black or red. Don’t forget the local dog and children’s park.  Use Craigslist!

Also I have noticed a lot of dogs without collars while at home. What sense does that make?!  If they run out of the door and get lost they are without their identification!!! Make them wear it all of the time.  A lot of the lost dog ads say that the animal doesn’t have it’s collar on. That is a an accident waiting to happen.

Any other ideas are very welcome.

Give A Helping Hand

Do you know someone who could use a helping hand? Do you know someone who might be suffering from Compasion Fatigue? Maybe you could sit with there loved one for an hour a day or once a week. Buy them some groceries. Cut their grass. Clean their house. Bring them library books or your books that you have read. Send them a pizza.  Any number of things that we might take for granted would be most welcomed and appreciated by them. Look around and see who you could give a helping hand too. You can make the world a better place. You might even prevent someone’s death or suicide. Give it some thought and pass the idea around.

The Social Lives of Dogs by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas

I finished reading it. I can not even begin to tell you how wonderful this book is. I think every human being whether they have a dog or not should read this book. It is just as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking at times. The bond that this woman and her husband have with all of their dogs, cats, and birds is beyond amazing. You will be stunned by the many things you learn about dogs and their most often misunderstood feelings. I can assure you that you will never look at a dog or cat or bird the same way again.

This woman is my hero and this book will forever be my favorite book. I will search every thrift store high and low for copies of this book to give to every family member, friend, neighbor and even strangers. I will find as many copies as I can to donate to animal shelters for people to take home with their new pets.

As for all of the dominance theories to dog training they are rubbish and I will never again adhere to any of them. Dogs deserve more respect than those programs give them. A dog truly is or could be man’s best friend.

If you want to understand you dog better and make a true lifelong bond then get this book as fast as you can.

If you or anyone you know is keeping a dog in a little fence at the very back of your yard then you are inflicting horrible pain and suffering on a member of your family and you need to fix that situation. A dog wants nothing more than to be as close to you as it can get. So by banishing it to the fartherst part of the yard you are telling it that is an unwanted, unloved bad dog. It cannot begin to fathom what it has done wrong. And we all know it hasn’t done anything wrong.  Think about it. And read the book.

Noah Didn’t Fly Away

Matthew 24:37
Noah wasn’t carried away to safety. He was told to prepare for the coming anarchy and he did. He gathered supplies, food, animals, seeds and built a shelter.

Noah was kept safe in the middle of chaos because he had the peace of God that comes from an ongoing personal relationship. Faith is not the mental assent of the mind nor a confession of the mouth but an obedience to the revealed will of God just as the Bible is not a book of principles to be practiced to find favor with God but a book of promises to be believed. Some promises are for some people, other promises for other people. Not all promises are for everyone. The only one that is for everyone is the promise of salvation.

A new earth was then created.

Matthew 24:29

Thessalonians 4:13

Noah had a  spiritual peace from God. Because of Jesus Christ our rest is in our hearts. Not in a specific day or time of worship. We have no way of earning our way to heaven or threat of being left behind. There is no left behind.

Scripture says that in the blink of an eye a new heaven and a new earth will be created.

Do you think the people of Egypt, Syria, Libya, Rwanda, Bosnia and Serbia are not experiencing tribulation? And worst of all the people who suffered in the Holocaust? Truly nothing could be worse than what they went through.

II Thessalonians 2:2

II Thessalonians 2:1-4

No one will escape ahead of time, so as Noah did you should prepare. Physically and most importantly spiritually.

But don’t trust me, read the Word for yourself.

Cat Allergies Can Be Controlled

This article on Yahoo News leaves a few stones unturned I believe. I do understand the severity of allergies as I have struggled with them all of my life. Twenty something years ago when I was pregnant I developed chronic severe asthma. It did subside a few years later only to reappear whenever I have bronchitis and of course when I got an indoor dog and then a cat. But something the article fails to mention is the fact that there are so many new medicines available now that didn’t  exist  twenty years ago not to mention when I was a young child and loved cats.

Yes I have to take medicine. Yes it is expensive but the joy I get from finally being able to have a dog in the house and a cat at all let alone in the house is priceless. Ok maybe that isn’t the best way to say that. It does come at a high price but it is doable.

I take Singulair for allergies and use a Symbicort inhaler.  So it can be done.  So don’t throw the cat (or dog) out without looking into the matter first.  You’ll miss out on far too much love and joy.

Papaya!

Wow this stuff is a super food. I ate some for breakfast and I feel great! I found amazing facts about the cool fruit here. If you don’t know much about papaya you need to read this.

The Journey to Reclaim Godly Femininity Part II

I am once again sharing what Brittany from The Gentle Home has written about Godly femininity.

The Journey to Reclaim Godly Femininity Part II

Last week I shared with you how my heart had been stirred to find out what Godly femininity really was- that is, what does God, as our Creator, have to say about His female creation? Surely, as our Designer He would have a few things to say to us. (Read Part I here) As a Christian woman, I knew there were certain ways I should conduct myself, but after studying a few scriptures that described femininity as God truly intended it to be (Ephesians 5: 22-24, 1 Timothy 2: 9-15, Titus 2: 3-5, 1 Timothy 5:14, 1 Peter 3: 1-6, Proverbs 31) I was shown by the perfecting light of God’s word how far I was from His original and beautiful design. And why was it I failed to find very many women who I could also look to and say- “Yes, she follows the word of God. She is modest, loving, discreet, gentle and quiet, submissive to her husband- yes that is a Godly and feminine woman.” Although I am blessed to know some lovely Godly women! (And by submissive I just mean living in the order of the family as God made it: Christ the head of the husband, husband the head of his wife. It is not a bad thing! See Ephesians 5:22-33)

I was also shown in His word that God’s standards for maintaining purity in this world are much higher than I realized, but the end result of becoming a Godly woman much more glorious than I could have imagined! I began to have a deep “heart hunger” to reclaim the life of Godly femininity that our society has rejected but God has wondrously and clearly defined in His word, the Bible, and through Jesus given me the power to walk in it. And not only that, but to see other women also throw off all else and eagerly pursue this journey of knowing, understanding and walking in the light of the Biblical definition of what it means to be made female.

There are a lot of things I thought I would write about here in Part II…none of which I am going to do. I realized anything that I wanted to say I could not give justice to in just one or two posts. I thought I would simply leave you with some verses that may inspire you, encourage you, convict you, or just make you think. I pray you continue to study the Bible and allow it to transform you.

“Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life.” Proverbs 31: 10-12

“The older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things- that they admonish the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good, obedient to their husbands, that they word of God may not be blasphemed.” Titus 2: 3-5

“Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.” 1 Peter 3:1-2

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification…that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor.”

1 Thessalonians 4:3-4

“And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, So shall your God rejoice over you.” Isaiah 62: 5

“So the King will greatly desire your beauty; Because He is your Lord, worship Him.” Psalm 45: 11

[God talking to Jerusalem, but also to us, His beloved] ” ‘You were exceedingly beautiful and succeeded to royalty. Your fame went out among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through My splendor which I had bestowed on you,’ says the Lord God.” Ezekiel 16: 13-14 (emphasis mine. Read all of Ezekiel chapter 16- it is stunning)

There is a radiant vision of womanhood, of femininity that we have lost so much of and now are continuing to lose in this society. I am on a journey to reclaim it- for myself, for my daughter especially, but also for all the women everywhere who don’t yet know how they long to step into this place of rest. This place of Godly femininity.
